Edublog Award Excitement!

Today was a very exciting day for 2KM and 2KJ as it was the Awards Ceremony for the annual Edublog Awards.

eddies

We were honoured to be short listed out of hundreds of nominations in many different categories.

Most students stayed in at recess and watched the ceremony on the interactive whiteboard at 11am. There were some fabulous results for 2KM, 2KJ and their friends. The top five in each category were recognised.

Best Class Blog

We came FIFTH! Two of our closest “blogging buddy”classes were in the top five. Mrs Yollis’ Classroom Blog came FIRST and Mr Salsich’s Class Blog came FOURTH!

We were the only Australian class in the top five. Go Aussies!

Best Student Blog

Seven 2KM and 2KJ students were shortlisted which was an amazing achievement as there were hundreds of nominations.

Congratulations to Jarrod who came FOURTH! Mrs Yollis’ former student, Jaden came FIRST. Miriam and Victoria, also students of Mrs Yollis, came SECOND.

Being an Edublog Award finalist is an incredible achievement for Jarrod. He only started his blog in mid-2011 and has already had nearly 3000 visitors. Jarrod was also the youngest student in the top five (he recently turned eight).

Jarrod

Best Group Blog

Our third piece of exciting news was that Our World, Our Stories WON the Best Group Blog category!

There were cheers of delight as the announcement was made. Our World, Our Stories is a global project that we have been working on with classes in five other countries for most of this term. It has been an incredible learning opportunity and a highlight of 2011 for the students.

What a way to end Our World, Our Stories with an award that we can all celebrate together!

Our World Our Stories

Other Great Results

Many of our blogging buddies also experienced excellent results to recognise the fabulous work that they do with educational blogging.

Mrs Yollis and her class WON the Most Influential Blog Post category and Mrs Yollis came SECOND in the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr Avery and his class came THIRD in the Best Use of Audio / Video / Podcast category.

Mrs Hembree and her students came SECOND by just one vote in the Best Librarian / Library category.

2KM and 2KJ students Haille, Ava, Millie, Charlotte, Jordi and BB (2KM 2010) were shortlisted from hundreds of student blogs. What an achievement for grade two students! This was the second year that grade three student BB was nominated!

All of our blogging friends, teachers, students and classes are winners in our eyes.

This year, 2KM and 2KJ have discovered how blogging can help us improve and grow in so many ways. While awards are nice, we all know that personal improvement is what counts. This is something we have definitely won!

A Skype Call with Mrs Yollis’ Class

It was a fun morning in 2KM and 2KJ today because we skyped with Mrs Yollis and her third graders!

Yollis Nov 2011

We haven’t been able to skype with Mrs Yollis and her new students yet because of the different time zones. However, now there is daylight saving here in Victoria, and Americans have finished daylight saving, so we have a small window of time where we are at school when Mrs Yollis’ class is!

2KM and 2KJ students came to school early today and it was 8.45am Wednesday morning when we started skyping. Over in California it was 1.45pm Tuesday afternoon!

Mrs Yollis’ class finishes school at 2.21pm. Lots of her students stayed back after the bell to keep chatting!

*********************

For our Skype session, we assigned some special jobs to students:

Alana was our greeter. She introduced the class and started our skype call.

Haille and Ava were our typists. They used netbooks to type up the questions, answers and conversations we had.

Jordi and Mia were the photographers. They took photos of the interesting moments during the skype chat.

Our researchers were Charlotte, Molly, Quinn, Liam, Jarrod, Dana and Kayla. They thought of interesting topics to share with our American buddies and found information on the internet.

Other students brought in some special “Australian” items for a show and tell session.

*********************

Before our skype call, 2KM, 2KJ and Mrs Yollis’ class organised some questions and answers to share. It was interesting to learn some new information about America. Our researchers enjoyed sharing some Australian facts.

Read what our typists recorded during our Skype chat below…

Our photographers took photos to show all the fun we had…

What did you learn about America?

What are some similarities or differences between Australia and America?

Do you have an interesting fact about Australia that you could share next time we Skype?

Be sure to head over to Mrs Yollis’ Class Blog and check out the post about the Skype call from their end. It is a terrific post!

Our Friends in California

2KM and 2KJ love blogging and one of our favourite things about having a class blog is connecting with other student bloggers from all around the world!

Mrs Yollis and her third grade class in Los Angeles, California (USA), are one of our closest blogging buddies. We love to check out Mrs Yollis’ blog, leave her comments and have commenting conversations. We have learnt a lot about life in America from Mrs Yollis and her students.

Just to show how far away we live from Mrs Yollis, look at the map below. (Click on the picture to enlarge it).

A few weeks ago Jarrod sent a special package over to Mrs Yollis’ class. Check it out here. Read about what happened when Mrs Yollis’ class tasted vegemite!

We got such a surprise yesterday when we received a big parcel, all the way from Mrs Yollis’ class in California!

Our special package contained a lovely card, American flags for all students, four packets of “Jelly Belly” jelly beans, delicious lolly pops for everyone and a wonderful Californian book, titled “Golden Numbers”. We are so lucky!

Do you have any friends or family members who live in another country?

What have you learnt from Mrs Yollis and her students about America?

What is your favourite treat to eat?

Happy 50th Birthday, Mrs Yollis!

Mrs Yollis is a very special third grade teacher in California, USA.

Mrs Morris first became friends with Mrs Yollis through blogging in 2009.

Read one of the first posts about the 2KM/Yollis friendship on Mrs Yollis’ class blog here. Our friendship has now developed over three years of blogging with different students!

Even though Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan have never actually met Mrs Yollis, they consider her a true friend. She has helped them in so many ways to make their classroom the exciting place it is today!
