Edublog Award Excitement!

Today was a very exciting day for 2KM and 2KJ as it was the Awards Ceremony for the annual Edublog Awards.

We were honoured to be short listed out of hundreds of nominations in many different categories.

Most students stayed in at recess and watched the ceremony on the interactive whiteboard at 11am. There were some fabulous results for 2KM, 2KJ and their friends. The top five in each category were recognised.

Best Class Blog

We came FIFTH! Two of our closest “blogging buddy”classes were in the top five. Mrs Yollis’ Classroom Blog came FIRST and Mr Salsich’s Class Blog came FOURTH!

We were the only Australian class in the top five. Go Aussies!

Best Student Blog

Seven 2KM and 2KJ students were shortlisted which was an amazing achievement as there were hundreds of nominations.

Congratulations to Jarrod who came FOURTH! Mrs Yollis’ former student, Jaden came FIRST. Miriam and Victoria, also students of Mrs Yollis, came SECOND.

Being an Edublog Award finalist is an incredible achievement for Jarrod. He only started his blog in mid-2011 and has already had nearly 3000 visitors. Jarrod was also the youngest student in the top five (he recently turned eight).

Best Group Blog

Our third piece of exciting news was that Our World, Our Stories WON the Best Group Blog category!

There were cheers of delight as the announcement was made. Our World, Our Stories is a global project that we have been working on with classes in five other countries for most of this term. It has been an incredible learning opportunity and a highlight of 2011 for the students.

What a way to end Our World, Our Stories with an award that we can all celebrate together!

Our World Our Stories

Other Great Results

Many of our blogging buddies also experienced excellent results to recognise the fabulous work that they do with educational blogging.

Mrs Yollis and her class WON the Most Influential Blog Post category and Mrs Yollis came SECOND in the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr Avery and his class came THIRD in the Best Use of Audio / Video / Podcast category.

Mrs Hembree and her students came SECOND by just one vote in the Best Librarian / Library category.

2KM and 2KJ students Haille, Ava, Millie, Charlotte, Jordi and BB (2KM 2010) were shortlisted from hundreds of student blogs. What an achievement for grade two students! This was the second year that grade three student BB was nominated!

All of our blogging friends, teachers, students and classes are winners in our eyes.

This year, 2KM and 2KJ have discovered how blogging can help us improve and grow in so many ways. While awards are nice, we all know that personal improvement is what counts. This is something we have definitely won!

Science with Melane

Over the past few weeks Amelie, Bradley, Jarrod and Mikayla have been doing science with Melane (Jarrod‘s Mum).

This is a special guest post by Amelie, Jarrod and Mikayla.

We did 5 science lessons.

In lesson 1 we put oil and water together to see if they would mix. Then in separate containers, we added food dye, dishwashing liquid, milk and red vinegar to the oil and water to see which ones would mix with the oil and which ones would mix with the water.

In lesson 2 we made butter using a marble, a container and cream. We had to shake the container for about 10 minutes until we had butter and butter milk.

In lesson 3 we got to make Milo ice-cream. We had to put cream, Milo and milk into a container and mix and  then place the container in a bowl and surround it with ice. Then we had to put salt on the ice to make the ice melt and turn the mixture into ice-cream. While we waited for the mixture to turn into ice-cream we tried to get ice out of a glass of water using string and salt, we weren’t allowed to touch it though.

In lesson 4 we tried to find out if putting a coat on a snowman would make him melt or stop him from melting. To find this out we tried melting ice cubes in different ways such as, wrapping one in foil, placing one in water, leaving one in a plate and putting one in our mouth. We learnt the ones in our mouth and in the water melted the quickest.

In lesson 5 we melted all different cubes of ice to see which would melt first. We melted ice cubes made from mango and apple juice, cordial, milk and lemonade. We discovered the cordial and lemonade ones melted the fastest.

After we finished all of the science lessons we presented a PowerPoint slide show to our class. Here is a copy of what we presented.

What was your favourite science experiment?

Have you done one of these science experiments before?

Do you have a science experiment you can share with us?

New Student Blogs!

It has been an exciting week in 2KM and 2KJ as four students started their very own blogs!

Having your own blog in grade two is a big honour and responsibility. Mrs Morris and and Miss Jordan had to think carefully about who has shown lots of commitment to our class blog, who has left lots of comments at school and at home and who regularly replies to other people’s comments. It was a tough decision because there are so many great commenters in 2KM and 2KJ!

Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan decided the following students deserved their own blogs…

Student blogs

Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan have been working hard with the new bloggers. They have learnt lots of new skills already and they are looking forward to learning even more about blogging next term.

To visit the student blogs and leave them a comment, check out the following links.

The student blogs are also linked on the blogroll on our class blog. Find them under “LPS Student Blogs” on the sidebar.

What tips do you have for our new bloggers?

If you had your own blog, what would you post about?

Guest Post – Jarrod

Last month Jarrod was the 2KM winner of our May Is Family Blogging Month competition. Part of his prize was that he won a guest post on our blog. Here it is!

the block Jarrod

Hi everyone, my name is Jarrod and I won this special guest post from winning the May is Family Blogging Month in 2KM.

Our family has 20 acres of land in Amphitheatre, Victoria which we call “The Block”. We sometimes go there by ourselves or with friends. It takes us just over two hours to drive there.

The Block Jarrod map

At “The Block” I like to;

• Ride my motorbike
• Go yabbying
• Go four wheel driving
• Help Dad with the firewood
• Toast marshmallows
• Cook garlic bread on the potbelly
• Go for a drive to Avoca (the next town)

At “The Block” there’s lots of wildlife. I’ve seen kookaburras, kangaroos, echidnas, lizards and snakes.

Have you ever been to Amphitheatre or Avoca?

If you had a block of land what would you do when you go there?

Please leave me a comment. Thank you.

Family Blogging Month Winners Announced!

During May, the students in 2KM and 2KJ have been trying hard to get all their families and friends involved in our class blog.

We had a competition called May is Family Blogging Month where we used a chart to record how many comments we were receiving from the students’ families and friends.

It was fantastic that we had so many mums, dads, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, family friends and neighbours comment on our blog!

Yesterday was the last day of May so the winners were announced. Congratulations…

Jarrod and Ebony

Jarrod and Ebony each won a $20 voucher for Godfather’s on Leopold Pizza and Pasta Restaurant and some lollies and chocolate for dessert!

Jarrod and Ebony have also won a guest post each on our class blog! It will be interesting to see what they decide to post about.

It is fantastic that almost every student in 2KM and 2KJ got involved in the blogging challenge during May.

We had around 800 comments on our blog during May. Wow!

Now that the competition is over, we still hope that many friends and families of the students in 2KM and 2KJ will continue to visit our blog regularly!

We would like to say a BIG thank you to Godfather’s Restaurant in Leopold for kindly donating the two vouchers. Jarrod and Ebony will enjoy a delicious dinner with their families to celebrate!

What did you think about our “May is Family Blogging Month” challenge?

Do you have any ideas for other challenges we could have later in the year?
