Mrs Yollis’ Class is Back!

Mrs Yollis is back at school with her new third grade students!

Mrs Yollis’ class lives in Los Angeles, California. They are in the Northern Hemisphere and we are in the Southern Hemisphere. Even though we live on opposite sides of the world, we are great friends.

Because it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, Mrs Yollis’ class have just finished their summer break. Last week Mrs Yollis started back at school with a brand new bunch of third graders.

Mrs Morris first became friends with Mrs Yollis through blogging in 2009. Read one of the first posts about the 2KM/Yollis friendship on Mrs Yollis’ class blog here. The new third graders in Mrs Yollis’ class are the fourth group of students that 2KM and 2KJ has been blogging buddies with!

Mrs Yollis’ class are beginner bloggers so we encourage everyone in the 2KM and 2KJ community to support them!

Please visit their blog now and leave them a comment! Don’t forget to say who you are and where you’re from. Be sure to model a quality comment.

We look forward to lots of fun and learning with Mrs Yollis and her new group of students!

A Gift for Leo!

Hi everyone, it’s me, Leo.

I am lucky to have lots of mascot buddies around the world. One of the mascots I have met this year is Ruckus the Reading dog.

Ruckus

Ruckus is in Ms Dowling’s K/1 class in Helensburgh, New South Wales. You can visit their blog called A Peek Inside and find out all about Ruckus by clicking here and here.

Ruckus has become a good friend of mine and sometimes we skype together when all the boys and girls go home from school! We have a lot in common. We both like reading and we both like blogging!

I could hardly believe my eyes this morning when I saw a parcel delivered to our classroom with my name on it!

I put together a slideshow to tell you all about my special morning.

I need a name for my new pet! The students in 2KM and 2KJ came up with some suggestions. Please help me decide by voting.

What name did you choose?

Have you ever received a surprise in the mail?

Our “Flat People” Are Home!

Everyone in 2KJ and 2KM was so excited today because our “flat people” have returned home to us from New Zealand!

P1030019

We have loved doing the Flat Stanley project with our friends, B4 and B3, in New Zealand. We spent time today reading the diaries that the New Zealand students wrote about our flat people. It was so much fun discovering the adventures our flat people had on their visit!

Highlights of the trip to Reefton, New Zealand included participating in the Athletic Sports, swimming in a river, going to the skate park, taking a tour of the police station and the fire station, going to a disco, diving for eels, visiting the Brunner Memorial Site, going horse riding and even riding cows!

A big thank you to everyone in B4 and B3 for looking after our flat people and showing them such a wonderful time in New Zealand!

2KJ and 2KM students, please comment: What did your flat person do in New Zealand?

Everyone else: Have you been to New Zealand? What did you do there? What would you like to see and do in New Zealand?

Skyping with Mrs Yollis’ Class

Today 2KM and 2KJ skyped with Mrs Yollis and her third grade students in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is in California, which is a state in the United States of America. We live in Leopold, a town in the state of Victoria, Australia. (Click on the picture to enlarge it.)

World map

***It was 9.00am in Leopold and 2.00pm in California***

Students in 2KJ and 2KM asked lots of interesting questions to our friends in California and we answered some of their questions too. We enjoyed learning about their seasons, animals, clothing, cafeteria, sports and lots more!

Mrs Gray (our student teacher from Deakin University) typed up a transcript of our Skype call. Read it below to see what we discussed with Mrs Yollis and her students…

Thanks to Charlotte’s mum, Martine, who took photos during our Skype session. Watch the slideshow to see the fun we had!

What did you learn during our Skype session?

What would you like to learn about America?

What are some similarities and differences between life in America and Australia?

So far, the quad blogging buddies have enjoyed getting to know Mrs Yollis’ class and Mr Salsich’s class.

This week, they’re focussing on Mrs McKenzie’s class, B4, in Reefton, New Zealand.

B4 are grade two and three students in a rural area on the south island of New Zealand.

Their blog is called Open the Door to B4.

2KM and 2KJ are enjoying collaborating on a Flat Stanley project with B4 and their friends B3.

B4 are hoping to get their comments up to a total of 900 this week. Can you help them?

Instead of leaving a comment on this post, why not head over to Open the Door to B4 and leave a comment for them!

They would love to hear from you.

The Flat Stanley Project

2KJ and 2KM are so excited to be involved in a special Flat Stanley project with our friends, B4 and B3, in New Zealand!

Flat Stanley is a book written by Jeff Brown in 1964. It is about the adventures of Stanley Lambchop, a young boy who is flattened by a bulletin board in his sleep. Everyone in 2KJ and 2KM loved hearing about the fun Stanley had.

Flat Stanley

Over the holidays, Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan contacted Mrs McKenzie, who teaches B4 in Reefton, NZ, and set up the project. The class next door to B4 is B3 with Mrs Webb, and they were keen to get involved too.

Here’s what the Flat Stanley project involves:

* 2KJ, 2KM, B4 and B3 all read the book Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown.

* We skyped with our friends in New Zealand last week to launch the project.

* Students from all four classes made their own Flat Stanley figures, but called them after themselves! (eg, Jarrod made a Flat Jarrod). They wrote a few sentences about themselves on the back.

* We will send our figures to New Zealand and they will send theirs to us!

* Each student will receive a flat person figure from New Zealand to look after. We will be writing diaries to show what the different flat people get up to in Australia before we send them back home to New Zealand.

* We will skype again with B4 and B3 in a couple of weeks to share the adventures the flat people had in Australia and New Zealand!

Here are some 2KJ and 2KM students with the flat people they made…

We can’t wait to meet the flat people from New Zealand!

What do you think of our Flat Stanley project?

Have you been involved in a project like this before?

Have you read the Flat Stanley books?

What do you think the Flat Stanley figures will get up to in Australia?

Let’s Visit Our Blogging Buddies: Meet Mrs Yollis’ Class

2KM and 2KJ enjoy sharing and learning with other classes around the world. This year, they are QUAD buddies with three other classes!

*Mrs. Yollis’ Classroom Blog U.S.A.*
*Open the Door to B-4  in New Zealand*
*Mr. Salsich Class Blog U.S.A*
*2KM and 2KJ  in Australia *

2KM and 2KJ have been friends with these classes for quite some time and the new 2011 students are enjoying getting to know their blogging buddies.

These classes read about Quad blogging from Mr. Mitchell. The concept: four blogging classes come together and learn about one another one week at a time. The alliance (group of friends) will help each class increase their readership while flattening their classroom walls and learning about the wonderful world we live in.
