We’re Back for Term Four!

Today is the first day of Term Four in Victoria, Australia .

It is the last term of school for us before our long summer holidays. When we return to school in February next year, the 2KM and 2KJ students will be in Grade Three!

*********************

It was terrific to hear that everyone in 2KM and 2KJ had a fantastic two week break. Over the holidays many students visited new places, went to the movies, enjoyed bike rides, saw their friends and watched Geelong win the AFL Grand Final!

***********************

We have two new students joining us for our final term. Dana is in 2KM and Morgan is in 2KJ.

Dana came from Mandama Primary School, where Mr D (our new principal) used to be the principal! Dana likes playing netball and she enjoys playing in her cubby house and on the trampoline with her younger sister, Lauren.

Morgan came from Nazareth Primary School. Morgan enjoys riding his bike, playing soccer and playing with his brother, Morrison and sister, April.

Here are Morgan and Dana with Leo!

Welcome Back Mr Avery and Mr Salsich!

We hope everyone in 2KM and 2KJ has enjoyed their first week of holidays!

A few weeks ago we welcomed back our blogging buddies from Mrs Yollis’ class in California on the west side of the USA. You can click here to read that post.

It is now time for us to send a belated ‘welcome back’ to some of our blogging buddies on the east side of the USA. They are Mr Avery’s class in Massachusetts and Mr Salsich’s class in Connecticut.

2KM and 2KJ Dinosaur Conference

At the end of each term, students at Leopold Primary School complete a Dynamic Assessment Task to celebrate their learning.

Grade Two students have been learning all about dinosaurs this term. To demonstrate their learning and understanding, we held the

free glitter text and family website at FamilyLobby.com

Students were asked to perform an interview in pairs. The task involved…

* Students taking on the roles of a journalist and a palaeontologist

* Researching facts about a particular dinosaur

* Writing out a news script with a partner

* Students completing a self-assessment rubric about their script and interview.

Check out the terrific interviews from the Dinosaur Conference below!

What did you think of our interviews?

Did you learn any interesting facts about dinosaurs?

What would you like to write a news script about?

A question for parents: What was your favourite subject at school?

This blog post is for parents and anyone else who would like to comment!

In 2KM and 2KJ we enjoy doing lots of different subjects. Some of the subjects we do in our classroom are…

A two hour Literacy Block

independent reading

Maths

 Mathletics

Technology

P1030358

Integrated Studies

P1030279

We also have three specialist subjects each week. Over the year we do Physical Education, Music, Art, Indonesian and Computers.

This got us thinking…what did the 2KM and 2KJ parents enjoy at school?

We’d love to hear from parents, family members and our other global visitors, so please leave us a comment!

What was your favourite subject at primary school and why?

Skyping a Dinosaur Expert

This morning 2KM and 2KJ were very lucky to skype with Jenni from the National Dinosaur Museum (NDM) in Canberra!

We thought of some very interesting dinosaur questions and Jenni answered them for us on Skype. We learnt so much and we are so grateful that Jenni gave up time in her busy schedule to help us all learn more about dinosaurs!

Tip: right click on each image and select “open in new tab” to make them larger.

Check out the summary Miss Jordan typed while the students spoke with Jenni.

Tip: click on full screen in the bottom right hand corner to see it larger.

What did you learn from Jenni?

What else would you like to ask a dinosaur expert?

What other sort of expert would you like to skype with?

Science with Melane

Over the past few weeks Amelie, Bradley, Jarrod and Mikayla have been doing science with Melane (Jarrod‘s Mum).

This is a special guest post by Amelie, Jarrod and Mikayla.

***********

We did 5 science lessons.

In lesson 1 we put oil and water together to see if they would mix. Then in separate containers, we added food dye, dishwashing liquid, milk and red vinegar to the oil and water to see which ones would mix with the oil and which ones would mix with the water.

In lesson 2 we made butter using a marble, a container and cream. We had to shake the container for about 10 minutes until we had butter and butter milk.

In lesson 3 we got to make Milo ice-cream. We had to put cream, Milo and milk into a container and mix and  then place the container in a bowl and surround it with ice. Then we had to put salt on the ice to make the ice melt and turn the mixture into ice-cream. While we waited for the mixture to turn into ice-cream we tried to get ice out of a glass of water using string and salt, we weren’t allowed to touch it though.

In lesson 4 we tried to find out if putting a coat on a snowman would make him melt or stop him from melting. To find this out we tried melting ice cubes in different ways such as, wrapping one in foil, placing one in water, leaving one in a plate and putting one in our mouth. We learnt the ones in our mouth and in the water melted the quickest.

In lesson 5 we melted all different cubes of ice to see which would melt first. We melted ice cubes made from mango and apple juice, cordial, milk and lemonade. We discovered the cordial and lemonade ones melted the fastest.

After we finished all of the science lessons we presented a PowerPoint slide show to our class. Here is a copy of what we presented.

What was your favourite science experiment?

Have you done one of these science experiments before?

Do you have a science experiment you can share with us?

Arrays all Around

Today we started learning about arrays.

Some of our blogging buddies have been learning about arrays too. Check out what our New Zealand friends, B4, did with Mrs McKenzie. In New South Wales, Mrs Dowling also focussed on arrays with her class.

We also found an old post by Mr Salsich’s third grade class in Connecticut, USA.  Thank you Mr Salsich for letting us use some of your work!

An array is a group of objects arranged in rows and columns. Each row has the same number of objects.

array3

Arrays are useful for skip counting and solving multiplication problems.

The array above has 3 rows of 4 blocks. That is 3 groups of 4, or 3 x 4. We can find out how many blocks there are by skip counting by 4’s:  4, 8, 12 – or by doing repeated addition: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

There are 12 blocks. So, 3 x 4 = 12.

Here is a slideshow of some arrays around our classroom! Can you solve the multiplication problems?

What are the answers to the multiplication problems in the slideshow?

What other arrays have you seen around?

Happy Fathers’ Day

It is Fathers’ Day on Sunday and everyone in 2KM and 2KJ would like to say

Mrs Yollis’ Class is Back!

Mrs Yollis is back at school with her new third grade students!

Mrs Yollis’ class lives in Los Angeles, California. They are in the Northern Hemisphere and we are in the Southern Hemisphere. Even though we live on opposite sides of the world, we are great friends.

Adapted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hemisferio_Sur.png

Because it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere, Mrs Yollis’ class have just finished their summer break. Last week Mrs Yollis started back at school with a brand new bunch of third graders.

Mrs Morris first became friends with Mrs Yollis through blogging in 2009. Read one of the first posts about the 2KM/Yollis friendship on Mrs Yollis’ class blog here. The new third graders in Mrs Yollis’ class are the fourth group of students that 2KM and 2KJ has been blogging buddies with!

Mrs Yollis’ class are beginner bloggers so we encourage everyone in the 2KM and 2KJ community to support them!

Please visit their blog now and leave them a comment! Don’t forget to say who you are and where you’re from. Be sure to model a quality comment.

Yollis Aug 2011

We look forward to lots of fun and learning with Mrs Yollis and her new group of students!
