Skyping Mr Avery

Today, 2KM and 2KJ were lucky enough to skype with their blogging buddy, Mr Avery!

Mr Avery teaches 4th grade in Massachusetts, USA. He has a wonderful blog and 2KM and 2KJ has enjoyed getting to know Mr Avery’s class this year.

Unfortunately 2KM and 2KJ can’t skype with Mr Avery’s class because when we start school at 9am it already 7pm in Massachusetts! Fortunately, Mr Avery was nice enough to give up 30 minutes of his evening to skype with us!

When we called Mr Avery, it was 10am Tuesday in Leopold and 8pm Monday in Massachusetts. Mr Avery was just preparing for his last day of the school year as it is nearly time for the summer holidays in the northern hemisphere.

Lots of students in 2KM and 2KJ prepared excellent questions for Mr Avery. They tried to think of open questions rather than closed questions with a yes/no answer.

Here are some of the things we found out about Mr Avery:

  • He will be teaching maths and science in 6th grade next year.
  • Mr Avery enjoys playing golf, drawing, reading and running.
  • He has not been outside of the USA, except for Canada, but he has been to lots of different states in the USA.
  • Mr Avery can speak a little Spanish.
  • He loves to teach maths and make movies about maths with his students.
  • Mr Avery’s favourite book is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.
  • He would love to come to Australia one day!

Happy 50th Birthday, Mrs Yollis!

Mrs Yollis is a very special third grade teacher in California, USA.

Mrs Morris first became friends with Mrs Yollis through blogging in 2009.

Read one of the first posts about the 2KM/Yollis friendship on Mrs Yollis’ class blog here. Our friendship has now developed over three years of blogging with different students!

Even though Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan have never actually met Mrs Yollis, they consider her a true friend. She has helped them in so many ways to make their classroom the exciting place it is today!

June 11th is a very special day for Mrs Yollis!

A message from the students around the world…

We are not the only ones who think Mrs Yollis is great. There are many students all around the world who have learnt something from Mrs Yollis. We got together with our blogging buddies in Mr Avery’s class, Mr Salsich’s class and Mrs McKenzie’s class (B4) to create this special “happy birthday” video.

A message from the teachers around the world…

Mrs Yollis loves helping other teachers and there are many teachers all over the world who are very fond of her. This is a special VoiceThread from all of Mrs Yollis’ friends. Students, teachers and anyone else, please add to the VoiceThread by recording a “happy birthday” message!

***Mrs Yollis has published a fabulous post on her blog about her birthday. It includes a thank you video for everyone. Click here to check it out!***

Ryley is Back from the USA!

Ryley has just come back from a month in the USA and The Bahamas!

A highlight of Ryley’s trip was visiting our blogging buddies in Mrs Yollis’ class. Read about it here.

Here are the wonderful gifts Mrs Yollis’ class gave Ryley. We loved seeing them!

Ryley's gifts from Mrs Yollis

Ryley brought back some souvenirs for everyone in 2KM and 2KJ! He gave them a (fake) US $100 note and a real penny (one cent coin).

Ryley Money

Ryley had such a fantastic time and did so many exciting things. Here is Ryley telling us a bit about his holiday.

Leave a comment if you have a question for Ryley.

What would you like to do in the USA?

A Surprise In The Mail

We were so excited to receive a special present in the mail from our friend, Chicken!

Chicken is friends with Mr Avery, and they both live in Massachusetts, in the United States of America.

You might remember Chicken (and his friend, Milk) left us some comments on our post about Food Safety and Storage. Check out what Chicken had to say about food safety!

The present we received from Chicken is a book. He must know we love reading in 2KM and 2KJ! The book is called Cloudy with a Chance of Chicken. What a great title! Our friend Chicken certainly is clever!

The book is written by Judi Barrett and the illustrator is Ron Barrett. It was published in 1978 and it was made into a movie in 2009. Here is the cover of the book and Mrs Morris reading it to the students.

The book is about a story that a grandfather tells to his grandchildren about the town of Chewandswallow, where the weather comes three times a day, at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is always food and beverages. There is a very similar book titled Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and you might like to listen to and watch the story below.

Even Leo loved our new book!

Chicken wrote us a special message inside the book cover. He asked us the following question:

What are some of the sometimes foods and everyday foods in the book?

You might also like to think about these questions:

What did you like about the book?

What other books do you like that have also been made into movies?

Ella Meets Mrs Yollis’ Class!

We have some very lucky students in 2KM and 2KJ.

Two weeks ago, Ryley from 2KM visited our blogging buddies in Mrs Yollis’ class during a holiday to the USA with his family.

We are currently in Arizona, having a great time. We saw Mrs Yollis and her class, as well as Mrs Ranney and her class. It was fabulous fun. Just wanted to say Hi, tried to blog, but couldn’t, we’ll try again later. We are just about to head off to the Grand Canyon to watch the sunset.
Lots of Love Ella and her Family. XO

A Gift for Leo!

Hi everyone, it’s me, Leo.

I am lucky to have lots of mascot buddies around the world. One of the mascots I have met this year is Ruckus the Reading dog.

Ruckus is in Ms Dowling’s K/1 class in Helensburgh, New South Wales. You can visit their blog called A Peek Inside and find out all about Ruckus by clicking here and here.

Ruckus has become a good friend of mine and sometimes we skype together when all the boys and girls go home from school! We have a lot in common. We both like reading and we both like blogging!

I could hardly believe my eyes this morning when I saw a parcel delivered to our classroom with my name on it!

I put together a slideshow to tell you all about my special morning.

I need a name for my new pet! The students in 2KM and 2KJ came up with some suggestions. Please help me decide by voting.

What name did you choose?

Have you ever received a surprise in the mail?

Ryley Meets Mrs Yollis!

Something very exciting happened today…Ryley from 2KM visited Mrs Yollis and her class in Los Angeles!

 Ryley 2

Ryley and his family are holidaying in America and they arranged the visit. Mrs Yollis posted about this terrific event, check out her blog to see what Ryley and his family got up to in Mrs Yollis’s classroom!

Our “Flat People” Are Home!

Everyone in 2KJ and 2KM was so excited today because our “flat people” have returned home to us from New Zealand!

We have loved doing the Flat Stanley project with our friends, B4 and B3, in New Zealand. We spent time today reading the diaries that the New Zealand students wrote about our flat people. It was so much fun discovering the adventures our flat people had on their visit!

Highlights of the trip to Reefton, New Zealand included participating in the Athletic Sports, swimming in a river, going to the skate park, taking a tour of the police station and the fire station, going to a disco, diving for eels, visiting the Brunner Memorial Site, going horse riding and even riding cows!

A big thank you to everyone in B4 and B3 for looking after our flat people and showing them such a wonderful time in New Zealand!

2KJ and 2KM students, please comment: What did your flat person do in New Zealand?

Everyone else: Have you been to New Zealand? What did you do there? What would you like to see and do in New Zealand?

We Loved the Flat Stanley Project!

2KJ and 2KM have loved doing the Flat Stanley project with Mrs McKenzie and B4 and B3 in New Zealand!

You can read all about our project here. A week after we sent our flat people to B4 and B3, they arrived safely in Reefton, New Zealand. We received the flat people from New Zealand at about the same time. We were so excited!

Each student chose a flat person to look after at home for a week. Here’s a few excited 2KJ and 2KM students with their New Zealand flat friends!

NZ flat people

The students had to write a diary for their flat person, describing all the fun activities they got up to while in Australia. Some students even took photos of the flat people!

Ryley, Amelie, Kayla and Will took their flat people on a tour of Leopold Primary School. I bet it’s different to school in New Zealand!

The flat people had a wonderful time in Australia. They went to swimming lessons and tennis lessons, jumped on trampolines, visited the Port Fairy Folk Festival, went camping, travelled to Warnambool, went to the circus, rode motorbikes, went to birthday parties and lots more! Molly’s mum even took the flat person to her work for the day!

Some parents emailed us photos of the flat people. Check out what they got up to at with some of our students at home!

What did you like showing your flat person?

What do you think our flat people got up to in New Zealand?

If you had to look after a flat person from another country, what would you show them?
