Writing Collaborative Storybirds

Last week, the students in 2KM and 2KJ had a fabulous time writing collaborative stories with the sixth graders in Mr Avery’s class in Massachusetts, USA.

You can click here to read Mr Avery’s post about our project.

Avery Stories

We used an online program called Storybird.

storybird

We used Storybird earlier in the year to write our own stories, but we had never used it to write collaborative stories before. Earlier this year, B4 in New Zealand and Mrs Watson’s class in Canada collaborated on Storybirds and gave us the idea to do this ourselves. Check out their work here and here.

Even though the students in Mr Avery’s class are four years older than us, that didn’t stop us working together. Mr Avery’s sixth graders were excellent role models for us and helped us to produce our very best work.

Here are four of the Storybirds and you can find the rest by visiting Mr Avery’s class blog here. Thank you Mr Avery for collating the Storybirds!

What did you enjoy about this project?

Edublog Award Excitement!

Today was a very exciting day for 2KM and 2KJ as it was the Awards Ceremony for the annual Edublog Awards.

eddies

We were honoured to be short listed out of hundreds of nominations in many different categories.

Most students stayed in at recess and watched the ceremony on the interactive whiteboard at 11am. There were some fabulous results for 2KM, 2KJ and their friends. The top five in each category were recognised.

Best Class Blog

We came FIFTH! Two of our closest “blogging buddy”classes were in the top five. Mrs Yollis’ Classroom Blog came FIRST and Mr Salsich’s Class Blog came FOURTH!

We were the only Australian class in the top five. Go Aussies!

Best Student Blog

Seven 2KM and 2KJ students were shortlisted which was an amazing achievement as there were hundreds of nominations.

Congratulations to Jarrod who came FOURTH! Mrs Yollis’ former student, Jaden came FIRST. Miriam and Victoria, also students of Mrs Yollis, came SECOND.

Being an Edublog Award finalist is an incredible achievement for Jarrod. He only started his blog in mid-2011 and has already had nearly 3000 visitors. Jarrod was also the youngest student in the top five (he recently turned eight).

Best Group Blog

Our third piece of exciting news was that Our World, Our Stories WON the Best Group Blog category!

There were cheers of delight as the announcement was made. Our World, Our Stories is a global project that we have been working on with classes in five other countries for most of this term. It has been an incredible learning opportunity and a highlight of 2011 for the students.

What a way to end Our World, Our Stories with an award that we can all celebrate together!

Our World Our Stories

Other Great Results

Many of our blogging buddies also experienced excellent results to recognise the fabulous work that they do with educational blogging.

Mrs Yollis and her class WON the Most Influential Blog Post category and Mrs Yollis came SECOND in the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr Avery and his class came THIRD in the Best Use of Audio / Video / Podcast category.

Mrs Hembree and her students came SECOND by just one vote in the Best Librarian / Library category.

2KM and 2KJ students Haille, Ava, Millie, Charlotte, Jordi and BB (2KM 2010) were shortlisted from hundreds of student blogs. What an achievement for grade two students! This was the second year that grade three student BB was nominated!

All of our blogging friends, teachers, students and classes are winners in our eyes.

This year, 2KM and 2KJ have discovered how blogging can help us improve and grow in so many ways. While awards are nice, we all know that personal improvement is what counts. This is something we have definitely won!

This is a guest post by Alana and Haille.

Today 2KM and 2KJ skyped with Mrs Watson’s class in Sointula, Canada.

It was 9 o’clock (in the morning) when 2KM and 2KJ were skyping and it was 2 o’clock (in the afternoon) when they were skyping.

Alana, Haille, Jordi and Mia all had a special job each. Alana and Haille were the typers. Jordi and Mia were the photographers.

Mrs Watsons class asked 2KM and 2KJ lots of questions and we asked them questions too.

Here is a screen shot of Mrs Watson’s 2/3 class blog. Also here  is the link to their blog because they have done a post too.Click here.

How to vote – 2011 Edublog Awards – 2KM and 2KJ

Bahasa Indonesia

At our school, we learn Bahasa Indonesia, or the Indonesian language.

This language is spoken by the people of one of our closest neighbours, Indonesia.

Indonesia (orthographic projection)

The country of Indonesia has the fourth largest population in the world. This means Bahasa Indonesia is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

Bahasa Indonesia is similar to the Malay language which is spoken in Malaysia and some other Asian countries.

Our guru Bahasa Indonesia (teacher) is Bu Mac. Bu means Miss or Mrs in Indonesian. Everyone loves going to their Indonesian class once a week.

MCMANUS

Here is an Indonesian VoiceThread. Record yourself saying these Indonesian phrases. Simply press on the comment button at the bottom of the VoiceThread.

We have added a new Indonesian Word of the Day widget on the left hand side of our blog. Check it out each time you visit our blog to learn a new Indonesian word. This is what it looks like.

learn indonesian widget

Another fun tool you might want to try out is Google Translate. You simply type in something in Indonesian and it will translate it to English. Or, you can type in something in English and it will translate it to Indonesian. You can also listen to the pronunciation.

Click here to use the Google English-Indonesian translator.

Apostrophes

When reading blog comments and other text as a class, we have been focussing on where to use an apostrophe.

An apostrophe is a type of punctuation.

apostrophe

On a keyboard, you can usually find an apostrophe to the left of enter.

keyboard apostrophe

Apostrophes can be confusing. Here are some tips that 2KM and 2KJ put together.

We enjoyed looking at this cartoon because it reminded us that we should not use an apostrophe every time a word ends with an s.  Remember, plurals don’t need an apostrophe before the s.

Apostrophe man to the rescue!

Did our tips help you learn about apostrophes?

Leave a comment with a sentence that has some words with apostrophes.

Can you make up a sentence that has an apostrophe before an s, after an s and in a contraction?

2011 Edublog Awards Nominations

Everyone in 2KM and 2KJ is very excited that it is time for the annual Edublog Awards because, in case you haven’t guessed, we love blogging!

The Edublog Awards have been running since 2004 and showcase some of the most popular blogs in education.

The purpose of the Edublog Awards is to promote and demonstrate the educational values of blogging. This is something we really believe in!

Edublogs

It was very, very hard for us to narrow down our choices for nominations as we have blogging friends in all corners of the globe.

Here are our nominations

Best Class Blog

Mrs Yollis’ Classroom Blog

We have many blogging friends but Mrs Yollis’ class is the first class that 2KM connected with nearly 3 years ago and we have developed a very strong friendship. Mrs Yollis and her class are constantly teaching us something, inspiring us, encouraging us and they are always up for a conversation using quality comments. They are true friends and role models!

Most Influential Blog Post

Family Blogging Month by Mrs Yollis’ Class

Mrs Yollis came up with the idea of Family Blogging Month a number of years ago. She runs it twice a year as a way for families to become more involved in their child’s education. 2KM and 2KJ have been running Family Blogging Months for a number of years also. We would like to nominate Mrs Yollis’ class for most influential blog post because there are now hundreds, if not thousands, of class blogs around the world implementing their idea of Family Blogging Month.

Best Student Blog

Jarrod’s Awesome Blog

Jarrod is a member of 2KM and he is seven years old. He has only been blogging since the end of June but he has already had well over 2000 visitors from around the world. Jarrod is a role model for student bloggers everywhere. He has developed a large following due to his quality posts that integrate a lot of different web 2.0 tools, and his commitment to replying to every visitor on his blog. Every week, he works with his mum, Melane, to create an interesting and creative post.

Best Individual Tweeter

Ross Mannell

Mr Mannell has to be 2KM and 2KJ’s biggest fan! He comments on nearly all of our posts (and student blogs) and tells us stories about all the adventures he has been on and things he has seen and done. He asks us questions and gets us thinking. Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan met Mr Mannell on Twitter. He is a retired primary school teacher who loves to use Twitter to find and support students and classes around the world.

Best Twitter Hashtag

#comments4kids

We love the #comments4kids hashtag! We have 14 student bloggers in 2KM and 2KJ. Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan often tweet with the #comments4kids hashtag to help drum up some support. It is fabulous!

Best Teacher Blog

The Learning Journey

This is a fabulous blog by second year graduate teacher, Stef Galvin in Melbourne, Australia. It is full of reflection and ideas. 2KM and 2KJ particularly like this teacher blog because Stef is one of our biggest supporters. She is always leaving us comments and helping us grow as writers and as people. She models for us what a good blogger is; someone who is involved in all aspects of the blogging community.

Best Use of Audio/Video/Visual/Podcast

Mr Avery’s Classroom Blog

Our friend Mr Avery is amazing at making videos with his students. This year, he has been making lots of maths videos with his students. Some of the maths concepts are a bit tricky for us because our students are four years younger than his students, however, we love each and every video he makes. What an amazing way to learn!

Best Library Blog

The Bulldog Readers

Mrs Hembree and her students in Seattle create this fabulous blog that links kids to books and web 2.0 tools. Mrs Hembree shares our love of reading and we enjoy seeing what is happening on her blog. Mrs Hembree also regularly comments on the 2KM and 2KJ blog and is always there to give us a reading recommendation.

Lifetime Achievement

Sue Wyatt

Miss W is a teacher and blogger from Tasmania. She is currently on a big trip around the USA with her mascot, Mr ‘Davo’ Devil. They are visiting lots of schools, bloggers and exciting places. Miss W runs the Student Blogging Challenge that Jarrod has taken part in and is constantly supporting classes and students who are blogging.

Best New Blog

Grade 2MK Leopold

2KM, 2KJ, Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris love encouraging other classes to give blogging a go. We would like to nominate 2MK and Mrs Milton at our school (Leopold Primary School). They have just started blogging this year and they’re always wanting to learn new things and grow as a blogging class. They have started Quad Blogging and they like making posts on a variety of topics with a range of web 2.0 tools.
