Writing Collaborative Storybirds

Last week, the students in 2KM and 2KJ had a fabulous time writing collaborative stories with the sixth graders in Mr Avery’s class in Massachusetts, USA.

You can click here to read Mr Avery’s post about our project.

Avery Stories

We used an online program called Storybird.

We used Storybird earlier in the year to write our own stories, but we had never used it to write collaborative stories before. Earlier this year, B4 in New Zealand and Mrs Watson’s class in Canada collaborated on Storybirds and gave us the idea to do this ourselves. Check out their work here and here.

Even though the students in Mr Avery’s class are four years older than us, that didn’t stop us working together. Mr Avery’s sixth graders were excellent role models for us and helped us to produce our very best work.

Here are four of the Storybirds and you can find the rest by visiting Mr Avery’s class blog here. Thank you Mr Avery for collating the Storybirds!

What did you enjoy about this project?

Do you like writing stories?

How did you enjoy using Storybird compared to writing a story on paper?

  1. Dear 2Km and 2KJ
What a great project to help you see the year out. I’m still working my way through reading and enjoying all of the stories but I am impressed at how well you have worked with your buddies in Mr Avery’s class to make stories that have a storyline that flows.
It’s not easy when you have to wait and see what your buddy added to the story and then maybe change your mind about the way you thought the story would turn out!

Did any of you get a surprise with the way your story turned out?
    best wishes
    Mrs McKenzie

    • Dear Mrs. McKenzie,

      Thanks for the great comment!

Hi I’m Jordi from 2KM, Leopold Australia!

I really got surprised how the stories turned out! They are really amazing. Don’t you think?

Before I was looking at your blog and I was wondering who started the stories? (Like you, B4 or Mrs. Watson?)

When I was doing the storybird I was with Dana (2KM) and Mr. Avery’s Grade 6’s that were with Dana and I were Taite and Hannah! They are really good writers and make PERFECT stories!

      Thanks for the amazing comment!

      Jordi (2KM)

PS- What a great way of finishing of our year!

      • Dear Jordi
Thank you for your reply. I do think the stories turned out well.
When we did our Storybirds the children in Canada started the story by choosing a title page and writing the first page, then the children went page about until the story was finished. I think they were surprised by how some of the stories turned out too.

I haven’t read your story yet, so I will have to go and look for it.

        Mrs M♔Kenzie

  2. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

I love this post it is nice and I also like story bird allot because you get to make stories and I like making stories.

    I love story bird! :-*

I think story bird is a nice thing to do when you are board and don’t have anything to do.

I think you are a good teacher Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan. 🙂

    • Dear Georgia

      Great Comment! 😛

I think Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan are fantastic teachers too. They have taught so
      much through the year!

I love doing the stories too. My partner was Dana and from Mr. Avery’s room it was Taite and Hannah!

  3. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

    Great post.

I really loved doing the storybirds with Mr Avery’s class it was so much fun. When we did netbook hour I left Mr Avery and my two partners and told them how much I loved doing the storybirds.

I loved about the project is that we got to write stories with people that we have not meet before so I thought that was fun.

Yes I do like writing stories and I wrote one about a girl that did not have any friends and at the end she has a hole Heep of friends to play with at snack and lunch.

I think it’s better to write stories online because when you write it on paper your writing could be not strate or you could not be good at drawing.

I really like doing the storybirds that was a lot of fun.

Like Jordi said it’s a great way to finish the year don’t you think?

    Great post again.

PS: Well done to everyone I bet you put a lot of effort into the stories that they did with your partners good job everyone.

    • Dear Millie,

      Thanks for the comment!

I think that it was a fantastic project too!

Who were your partner’s names? Dana and I had two girls called Taite and Hannah. They are great story writers! Also our story was called The Adventures of Mr. King! It is about a king who never travels with anyone and…
I would like to give a big well done to everyone too.

  4. Hello 2KM and 2KJ,

The final day for the school year draws close. Children in NSW have already finished school for the year. The number of tourists in my town is steadily growing yet you all are still working on wonderfully creative activities.

Your Storybird posts are wonderful. I checked on Mr Avery’s class as well. What a wonderful collection of creative works. 🙂

I enjoy writing stories from short ones of only 16 words to long ones of 50,000 words or more. It can be fun to create characters and storylines. I haven’t tried Storybird yet but the idea looks great.

Have a wonderful last couple days and enjoy your holidays. 🙂

    Ross Mannell (teacher)
    NSW, Australia

    • @ Ross Mannell,

      I love your comment!

When do the kids in NSW start back at school?

Thank you for saying are storybird posts are wonderful!

Wow, you like writing stories with 50,000 words or more!

You should try storybird, but if you want to sign up you need to have cookies on your computer(I do not mean the food cookies I mean the cookies that you download onto your computer.)
Have you got cookies on your computer?

We all will enjoy our holidays!

      Kind Regards,

P.S I hope you have a nice christmas!

  5. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
I really enjoyed writing stories with you! I think that it was a fun way to learn to write stories. I hope that we can continue to do fun things with your class. Thank you for writing stories with us.

    Will G., one of Mr.Avery’s 6th Graders

    • Dear Will,

      Great comment.

We had a great time working with you. 😎

Bodhi: My favourite bit of the story was when the birds took them away.

Mitchell: My favourite bit was when the animals saw Santa clause. 👿

      Did you enjoy the story?

      Mitchell and Bodhi

  7. Dear Mrs Morris, Miss Jordan and class,

Great post Miss Jordan and Mrs Morris!

    I loved doing the storybirds.
I enjoyed the project because you got to work
with a different person then you have in the year.
I like storybird more because you don’t just have to
do it with not just one or two you can work
with as many as you like

    Ella 😆

  8. @ 2KM and 2KJ,

  10. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

What wonderful story writers you all wrote.
I really loved reading all four of the stories.

I would have loved to write a story this way back when I was in school it would have been so much fun.

Thank you for letting me join in and be part of your blog.

    From your friend,
