Melbourne Cup Day

Today is Melbourne Cup Day!

It is called “the race that stops the nation”.

Here are some Melbourne Cup facts:

  • The race is 3200 metres long.
  • The race is for horses aged three and over.
  • It is held on the first Tuesday in November each year.
  • The first Melbourne Cup was held in 1861.
  • 2011 is the 151st Melbourne Cup.
  • The race is held at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Australia.
  • It is run as a “weight-for-age handicap”. That means the weight of jockey and riding gear is adjusted to a certain amount depending on the horse’s age and how well it has gone in previous races. Some horses carry more weight. Some horses carry less weight.
  • Race day in Melbourne is a public holiday. That means no school or work for people in Melbourne.
  • Many people like to bet on the race or particpate in a “sweep”.
  • The famous horse “Phar Lap” won the race in 1930.
  • The present record holder is the 1990 winner “Kingston Rule” with a time of 3 min 16.3 sec.

We has a sweep in 2KM and 2KJ today. That means everyone pulled the name of a horse out of a hat.

It was a very exciting race and it was a “photo finish” at the end!

First place with the horse Dunaden was Morgan (2KJ) and Millie (2KM)

Second place with the horse Red Cadeaux was Charlotte (2KJ) and Andrew (2KM)

Third place with the horse Lucas Cranach was Sophie (2KJ) and Ella (2KM)

Fashion is very important at the Melbourne Cup. We had our very own “Fashions on the Field” competition. The students had to design an outfit for the Melbourne Cup.

The winner of the girls was Ella (2KJ) and Mia (2KM).

The winner of the boys was Morgan (2KJ) and Ryley (2KM).

Here is a slideshow of all our Melbourne Cup action.

  1. Dear 2KM and 2KJ
Fashion Day for the Melbourne Cup looked wonderful!
I have two new words for you: ‘sartorially elegant’.
I wonder if you can find out what that phrase means!

Congratulations to the sweepstake winners and all of the fashion designers.

    from Mrs McKenzie

    • Dear Mrs McKenzie,

      Thanks for the great comment!

By the way I’m Jordi from 2KM.

2KM and 2KJ found out that ’sartorially elegant’ meant a pretty design made from someone named a tailor. Am I right?

      Jordi (2KM)

      • Dear Jordi
Well done for looking up the words!

Often those words are used to describe men and women who are looking very stylishly and smartly-dressed, with well-tailored clothing.

I thought all of the fashion models that 2KM and 2KJ made looked very smart!

  2. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

It looks like you had a fantastic Melbourne Cup day at school!

Because I work in Melbourne, my school had today off. Because we weren’t at school today, we did our Cup day activities yesterday – we made Melbourne Cup trophies and designed different coloured and patterned jersey’s for the jockeys.

Congratulations to all the sweep winners, and also to the Fashion on the Field winners. I loved seeing the different outfits that you all came up with.

I think you have two very clever teachers – they came up with some great activities for you to celebrate the Race that Stops the Nation!

What did you think of the horse races that you watched while eating your lunch?

    From your friend,
    Stef Galvin

    • Hi Stef Galvin,

Thanks for your comment 2KM and 2KJ loved it 😆

What did you do before the race started?

We did School work before the race started! I loved when my horse came in 2end place!

Did you do a sweep if you did what was your horse?

We just wanted to now who won.

2KM and 2KJ love to hear from you,

      Charlotte 😆

You are starting to be a wonderful blogger this term.

I loved watching the Melbourne cup too, and I loved cheering the horses on.

        Warm Wishes,
        Meg

  5. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

We love your Melbourne Cup Day! It sounded very exciting. Jadin’s favorite part was when everyone won their prizes. Angelina liked the class fashion show. Taciana’s favorite part was learning something new about your country, Australia.

Some of the Techie Kids were able to make connections because they have gone horse-back riding. Luke and Kaitlynn have been to a horse race at a track before. They both thought that it was exciting and fun.

We think that a sporting party is fun. Our class connected it to the Super Bowl parties that we have. In the winter, the top 2 teams in the National Football League face off against each other. Many people have parties to watch the event.

Thank you for sharing your slideshow and great ideas!

    Your buddies,
    The Techie Kids

    • Dear Techie Kids,

      Wow, what a fantastic comment.

Do you have Melbourne Cup Day at your country?

At your school do you have a canteen?

Do you have a soccer field at your school?

      From Jacob

  6. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,

    Great post.

The horse I went for was Dunaden and I was going to chose that horse and it came true.

I loved the activities we did and I really liked the maths and I also did it last year in 1/2W.

    Football, netball and lots more.

    Your friend,

    • @ Millie,

Wow, I love your comment it`s really lovely!

I think this is a great post to, and even about the horse race.

I`m very suprised that you won the horse race for the Melbourn cup, and the Geelong cup. Wow!

I enjoyed watching the race and cheering them on, did you?

Witch number were you or if you forgot your number, then what name was your horse?

Did you win the first, second, third or fourth?

How did you enjoy the fashions on the Field, and did you win?

      Hope you nice day tommorow!

      Love your blogging pal,

  7. Hello to everyone,

What a great day you had yesterday in 2KJ and 2KM! It looks as though you all had a great time which is fantastic 🙂

It was a very close finish this year wasn’t it? I think that’s what makes it exciting!

Do you know that each year in primary school, Charlotte has had a horse that has either won or come second in the cup?! I might have to get her to draw a name out of the hat for me next year so I can win some yummy lollies too!

I loved seeing all of the activities that you all did, it looked like they were enjoyed by everyone.

    Your blogging buddy,

    • Dear Martine,

      I love your comment.
Charlotte is so lucky to have won the Melbourne Cup. I wish I won the Melbourne Cup.
Yes it was a very close finish.

      Love Eb 😆

  8. Dear 2KM & 2KJ,
It looks like everyone enjoyed your Melbourne Cup activities! I really like the Melbourne fashions, especially the fancy feathers. They remind me of what we see on television in England when the women are all dressed up with elaborate hats.
In America we have the Kentucky Derby and other horse races. I have never been to one of those big races, so I know nothing about them.
Around Seattle, horse racing is not as big of a sport. This is more of a American football or baseball kind of town. Our teams haven’t done very well recently, but we love them anyway!
The one day that “stops the nation in sports” is the Super Bowl! Mrs. Moore and I agree on that one!
People who don’t normally watch football will get together with friends and watch on that day.
    Personally, I’d rather go snow-skiing!
    Mrs. Hembree

  9. Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
    great post Miss Jordan,

I was not happy that I missd out on all the fun but I had some fun to.

In the Melbourne Cup the horse I went for Dunaden.

  12. Hi 2KM and 2KJ,

    Great post Miss Jordan,

I like the Melbourne Cup because it has something to do with horses. 😆

Yes I agree in Quinns comment it was funny because Morgan won the Fashion on the Field and the Melbourne Cup race and one more thing he’s a new student.

    I love the photopeach.

It was really fun how I got to teach people how to draw horses and I hope they keep practising because you know practise makes perfect and I also felt like a teacher.

My horse was called At First Sight. He was coming 3rd for a while then he got tired just like Mrs Morris said don’t get too excited because your horse might get tired if it takes the lead for a while.

Yes the Melbourne Cup activities were great especially the Fashion on the Field one.

    From your blogging buddy,

    • @ Ava,

Fantastic comment, you`re a great blogger!

I loved the Melbourne Cup because we got to watch the horses race, that we got to cheer the horses on and the last thing I liked about it is because horses were involved.

I agree with Quinn`s comment as well, I think Morgan did a fabulous job at the Fasions on the Field though.

I really love the photopeach too.

I hope they keep practising on their horses too, I think I know why. It`s so they get better at drawing them. Is that correct? You sure looked liked you were having heaps of fun out there.

My horses were number eight and number twenty four I can only remember Fox Hunt, I can`t remember the other name though. What was your horses name or if you forgot the name then what was your horses number?

I loved the Melbourne Cup activities especially the Fasions on the Field one. The Fasions on the Field was my favourite because it was lots and lots of fun. Wich one was your favourite ❓

      Happy blogging ❗

      From your blogging buddy,

  13. Wow! Melbourne Cup day must of been a special day for you guys. That celebration looks so fun.
