2KM and 2KJ have been learning about subtraction in maths during the past few weeks.
Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan are very happy with the progress the students are making and it has been great to see the students sharing different subtraction strategies with each other. It is important to learn a variety of strategies but it is good to use strategies that work best for you.
At the start of each maths lesson we use our interactive whiteboard to practise our subtraction skills. We have been playing games, watching videos of subtraction strategies and the students have demonstrated how they solve subtraction problems.
Here are some subtraction games you will enjoy. Give them a try and improve your skills!
This website has lots of different subtraction games, give them a try!

@ 2KM and 2KJ,
I have not tried any of the games but I will.
One good strategy is to use your tens facts to help you solve larger subtraction problems.
I use subtraction when I do cooking with my mum.

Dear 2KM and 2KJ,
I think one of the best ways to learn is by playing games. I think if it’s fun, you’ll spend more time working on it and in turn, you’ll ended up knowing it even better. You are all so lucky to have two teachers that make learning so much fun.
One of my favorite videos about subtraction is Mr. Salsich’s subtraction number-line. Have you watched that one yet?
Keep up all the hard work. I know you’re all learning so much this year!
Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
@ Mr Avery,
Thankyou for leaving a comment on the blog!
I also think doing games helps getting better at maths and other subjets. It’s fun haveing two teachers, because they sometimes have different strategies that they can share with us in 2KM and 2KJ.
Yes I think we have watched Mr. Salsich’s video.
I’m not shore what my favourite video was, because they were all so great.
your blogging pal,
Alana
@ 2KM and 2KJ,
This is my opinion, subtraction is fun!
What is your favourite thing about subtraction? My favourite thing about subtraction is that you can learn new skills, get better at maths and it helps in every day situations.
In my house I sometimes subtract lots of things, like when cooking with my mum, when doing my made up homework that I make up, and when I play shops with my sister because I have to give her the right change.
I also have another favourite subtraction game and it is Speed Grid Challenge, it was great fun, but it is harder than it looks because you have to make your own problems by finding it on the board.
I will make a rating out of what my opinion is.
1. Fact Dash
2. Speed Grid Challenge
3. Number Cruncher and
4. Maths Magician.
See you tomorrow 2KM and 2KJ.
Your friend,
Alana

Hi 2KJ and 2KM,
Thanks for sharing some great subtraction games as well as explaining how you use subtraction in real life situations. I think subtraction is a bit tricky because our brains are much better at going forwards then they are at going backwards! I try to use this knowledge to help me when I am solving subtraction problems. So if I am only subtracting 1,2 or 3 I count backwards because that is easy for me to remember, but after that I use my addition facts to help me. For example I know
7 +4 = 11 so
11-7 = 4
11-4 = 7
It’s almost like solving a fill in the blank addition problem and because I am very good at addition, this works well for me.
The children in K/1D also like playing this subtraction game to practise taking away ten. http://www.ictgames.com/football2.html
I think they really like it because it is a soccer game!
Keep having fun with subtraction,
From Ms Dowling
